On the right bank of the River Guadiana, is the "guardsman" of the portuguese frontier facing the town of S.Lucar in Spain.
The castle have been constructed prior to Arabic settlement, rebuit and inhabited under the orders of Dom Dinis passing later to the Order of Santiago.
With a mediterranean climate, we can find a strong agriculture: figs and almonds are bettwen the products used in regional delicacies.

O castelo foi contruído antes da colonização Árabe, foi reconstruído e habitado por Dom Dinis e passou, mais tarde, para a Ordem de Santiago.
Com um clima mediterrânico, aqui se encontra um agricultura forte: figos e amêndoa estão entre os produtos usados nas especialidades gastronómicas locais.

Situated 34 km northwest from Faro, is believed to have been founded by Phoenicians and later occupied by the Romans.
At the begining of the VIII Century, the town was under Arabic domination, and was named Al-buhar (castle of the sea). In 1249, was conquered by Dom Afonso III and given to the Order of Avis.

Situada 34 Km a Noroeste de Faro, julga-se ter sido fundada pelos Fenícios e, mais tarde, ocupada pelos Romanos.
No princípio do Séc. VIII a cidade estava sob o domínio dos Árabes e era chamada Al-buhar (castelo do mar). Em 1249 foi conquistada por D. Afonso III e doada à Ordem de Avis.
